Familia LSPV:

Estamos afligidos y estamos lamentando.

A Aquel Que Es Poderoso,

LSPV Family:

This past week, we watched as Minneapolis resident George Floyd desperately pleaded for his life, while an officer mercilessly knelt upon his neck using the full weight of his body to constrict circulation. This inhumane act ultimately resulted in Floyd’s death.

This is not an isolated event but a consistent historical pattern and current occurrence/experience in our society for our black families and neighbors, specifically.

As followers of Jesus, individually and collectively as Living Stones-Piedras Vivas (LSPV), how should we respond?

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O human, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

We, the leaders of LSPV, categorically reject the hatred and fear that has led to the senseless taking of George Floyd’s life … and the life before that ... and the one before that .... While it is difficult in such circumstances to know exactly what to say, we acknowledge that to say nothing will also say something. This senseless loss of life and the injustice recent events highlight cannot be ignored or explained away. And, we are called to steward this moment, as representatives of the Kingdom in our broken world. May His Kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven...

In the wake of the ongoing tragedies, amidst grief and lament, we act - moving beyond our walls, loving others with our hands and feet, and voices. We come together in prayer, in nonviolent protest, and in seeking to walk with our neighbors who live amongst us who are oppressed and suffering injustice. We advocate for judicial accountability, systemic reform, and institutional change. We declare that new discipleship paradigms are needed to address racism and reframe it as a matter of discipleship, rather than a mere social issue. We, the body of Christ, purpose that we can no longer sidestep difficult conversations about police brutality/misconduct, racial supremacy and systemic sin.

As followers of Jesus, we remember that we are a people of a shared hope. We know and follow a God who is in the process of restoring all things. We have a message of hope that eclipses despair, dissonance, fatalism and ultimately causes us to remember who we are and whose we are. We know this hope because of the gift and revelation of the Holy Spirit. This hope gives us patience. This hope gives us confidence. This hope fuels our perseverance. This hope ensures us that God has not abandoned us. It reminds us that we must interpret the present in light of the promised future. It reminds us of God’s history of faithfulness amidst oppression, tyranny and injustice. It is this Spirit-inspired hope which empowers and enables those of us living under the weight of oppression and injustice to affirm both our humanity and dignity in the face of systems and structures which seek to strip us of them daily. It provides substance for our sojourn and undergirds our pursuit of the Kingdom.

This will require ongoing reflection and dialogue that begins with seeking the Lord for His perspective and listening to those amongst us who are more directly experiencing and impacted by these tragedies. Please listen, consider, and respond with a spirit of humility as we continue to seek together to be and make disciples of Jesus Christ that are Gospel-Driven, Church-Centered, and Neighbor-Focused.

Por favor ora por Larry

Familia LSPV:

please pray for larry

LSPV Family:

I wanted to update everyone and ask you to pray for our brother, Larry. He is currently hospitalized at Northridge Hospital & Medical Center and has a planned surgery for tomorrow morning (Saturday, 5/2) at 9:00 a.m. Larry has a bowel obstruction that has not resolved since he was admitted this past Monday evening. The surgery is a laparotomy, which means they will open his abdominal cavity to try and resolve the blockage in his intestine. The extent of the issue, the surgery, complications, and recovery are not known until they begin the procedure. It could be very serious and even require for them to remove part of his intestine and insert a colostomy bag.

We must pray! I would ask that you pray that the blockage would be removed with no intervention before tomorrow morning, with minimal intervention if they proceed with surgery, and that they would not have to remove part of his colon or put in a colostomy bag.

Because of the current situation with Covid-19, there are no visitors allowed at the hospital and Larry has been by himself since I dropped him off on Monday night. Larry is definitely discouraged and anxious at this time. Please text, call, or FaceTime Larry to encourage him and pray with him. His number is 773-308-3918.

I will keep everyone updated as I receive any further information.

Familia LSPV:

Juan 16: 31-33

John 16:31-33

31 Jesus asked, “Do you finally believe? 32 But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when you will be scattered, each one going his own way, leaving me alone. Yet I am not alone because the Father is with me. 33 I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

In this passage, Jesus was speaking to his disciples about the difficulties and sorrows to come that would be followed by joy - specifically referencing the death he would face on Good Friday and the victory He would claim on Resurrection Sunday. “So you have sorrow now, but I will see you again; then you will rejoice, and no one can rob you of that joy.” (John 16:22). On this Good Friday and looking forward to Resurrection Sunday - as his followers, as his body, as his disciples, these words from Jesus are for us!

He has faced death (both physical and spiritual/eternal) in our place on the cross and now we stand with Him in his victory resurrected from the grave! Even in the midst of the difficulty and sorrows of our current situation, we can take heart! Jesus has overcome and we have an enduring joy in this moment that will prove eternal.

I am praying for each of you during this time and looking forward to the moment when we can all gather together again in person to worship our King!

To Him Who is Able!

In the past, we have had a Good Friday service together to reflect on the suffering and death of Jesus in preparation for our celebration together on Resurrection Sunday. In the absence of gathering together physically during this time, I wanted to provide you with a resource that would help us to reflect and worship together during this weekend.
